The Sindh government has taken a big step towards empowering women in Karachi with the inauguration of two new routes for the popular Pink Bus Service.
Ms. Talpur praised the initiative, calling it a "gift" to the mothers, sisters, and daughters of Karachi. She highlighted the vision of President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in prioritizing safe and comfortable travel for women. She expressed her hope that the service's affordable fares would continue.
Senior Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, welcomed the guests and announced the new routes: R3 running from Powerhouse Chowrangi in North Karachi to Nasir Jump in Korangi, and R9 connecting Gulshan-e-Hadid to Tower. A total of ten new pink buses will operate on these routes.
Minister Memon emphasized the international recognition received by the Pink Bus Service for its high standards, affordability, and focus on women's safety. He reiterated the Sindh government's commitment to women's empowerment through initiatives like this.
In a display of this commitment, the Sindh government announced free travel for women on the Pink Bus Service for the next two months. The ceremony also saw Ms. Talpur present licenses to four trailblazing women who will be driving the pink buses.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Murad, Secretary Transport Sindh Asad Zaman, and other government officials.
This expansion of the Pink Bus Service is a positive step towards creating a more accessible and safer transportation system for women in Karachi. The free travel initiative is likely to encourage ridership and further empower women by providing them with greater mobility and independence.
