Modi's request cost BCCI dearly, X lost the 'golden tick'
World Web Desk
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has forfeited the Golden Tick from social media site X (formerly Twitter) after complying with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's request.
According to Indian media reports, BCCI put a picture of the Indian 'tricolor' in the display picture on its verified X account before the 77th Independence Day, after which the golden tick of the account was removed.
It happened that on August 13, Narendra Modi released a message on X and requested Indian citizens to put a picture of the Indian flag on the display picture of their social media accounts.
In his tweet, Modi wrote, 'In the spirit of Har Ghar Tringa movement, let us change the DP of our social media accounts, this unique effort will deepen the connection between us and our beloved country'.
According to reports, following Modi's request, the BCCI, including many leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also changed their DP, after which all of them lost their golden tick or blue tick.
Why did X remove the golden tick?
Elon Musk, the owner of microblogging website X, made several policy changes after buying Twitter in 2022, one of which was to eliminate free blue ticks and pay a monthly fee to verify accounts.
Musk called the free Blue service corrupt, as several well-known celebrities had fake accounts, but the new policy requires verified accounts to use their real names and display photos.
The BCCI account was verified as "BCCI" and used an image of the Indian cricket team's logo as its display image, but when BCCI changed its display image to the Indian tricolor. did, so X removed the golden tick from that account.
As per the revised X criteria, the management will now review the BCCI's profile and if it meets all the criteria, its blue tick will be restored.
BCCI's X account used to have BlueTick but Elon Musk changed the platform's standards after his $44 billion acquisition.
On which accounts are Golden Tucks held?
Under the new policy, Gold Ticks are given to certified companies or government companies.
According to the Indian media report, BCCI falls under the category of an independent body, hence it got the Golden Tick
